What's involved
Prep is the part of a floor you never see in the finished photos, and it's the part that decides how long the floor lasts. A coating can only be as good as the concrete it's stuck to.
A diamond grinder takes the smooth top skin off the slab, along with old paint, sealer and surface staining, and opens the concrete up so the primer can soak in. Cracks, chipped edges and tired joints are repaired, and the slab is checked for moisture, because a coating laid over damp concrete is a coating that won't last.

Look over the whole slab for cracks, damp patches, old coatings and anything loose.

Moisture check
Test how much moisture the slab is holding before anything else happens.

Diamond grind
Grind the surface back to open, sound concrete, edges included.

Repair
Fill cracks, fix chipped edges and joints so the surface is sound and even.

Clean and ready
Clean the slab down so it's ready for the coating system.

HR Epoxy did an amazing job transforming our flood-damaged downstairs into a lovely, clean living space.
The job itself was a bit tricky, as there was no waterproof membrane, and a lot of damage to the slab itself. HR Epoxy were super accommodating, and made sure ensure their work was timed to fit with the slab being dried, so there was no risk of it becoming moist between trades.
It was a big job. The slab was very discoloured and needed a lot of grinding back. They needed to apply a waterproof membrane to prevent a recurrence of the previous issues. There were lots of intricate areas under the stairwell and around existing fittings that needed time and patience...
The attention to detail is awesome! Tight areas have been finished properly, the flakes have been spread evenly, and the progression from room to room is seamless.
HR Epoxy were awesome to deal with, really professional, put in long days to get the job done, and nothing was too much trouble. Highly recommend!! The pictures speak for themselves...

01What is moisture testing, and why does it matter?
It checks how much moisture the slab is holding before it's coated. Too much moisture coming up through the concrete can push a coating off the floor.
It matters most on older slabs, slabs laid straight on the ground without a membrane, and anything that has been flooded.
02What gets repaired during prep?
Anything that would show through or let go under the coating: cracks, chipped and broken edges, uneven or damaged joints, and patches of old coating, glue or paint.
Repairs fix the surface. If a crack is still moving because the slab itself is moving, that's worth talking through before the job.
03Can old paint or sealer be ground off?
Yes. Old paint, sealer and loose coatings are ground back to bare concrete as part of prep.
The driveway in the before and after on this page was ground right back to raw concrete before the new finish went on.
